How Did Functional Medicine Start?

Functional Medicine was founded in 1991 by Drs Jeffrey and Susan Bland. It was born out necessity from Conventional Medicine’s ineffective drug-based model to address chronic diseases. They began to envision a result oriented, patient-focused and natural systems based model

From their years of treating patient’s, they began to realize that most of their patient’s health issues were caused from genetics, lifestyle choices, environmental exposures and stress related issues. From these observations, they created a comprehensive “whole person” approach that more accurately found the root causes of many chronic diseases and more importantly, they were able to restore healthy function by addressing the physical, mental and emotional needs of all their patients.

Dr. Bland is a internationally recognized leader in the field of nutritional medicine. He is also the co-founder of The Institute of Functional Medicine. Because of consistent and effective results he achieved, Functional Medicine slowly and steadily has grown in popularity and has become a “go-to” for people who want to don’t want to be on prescription drugs in order to feel better.

What is The Difference Between Conventional Medicine and Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine defines itself as a Holistic approach to treating chronic illness. The big problem with this method of today’s philosophy of modern medicine is that the underlying root cause of the disease is still remains in the body.

The main distinction of the labs is the ranges that are used to read the labs are different

Conventional lab ranges are based on a statistical bell curve average based on unhealthy individuals. So when you are told your lab results are normal yet you are constipated, gaining weight, can’t sleep, difficulty staying focused, experiencing pain at several joints or feeling irritable more and more, it is confusing to hear everything is normal.

The problem is that you have been told you are “normal” because you have been compared to other “unhealthy” people who have labs done.

Basically, you’re “normal” compared to sick and ill people

Whereas, Functional medicine’s labs are designed to find the root cause of the person’s illness. And the beauty of that is when we know the root cause, we can provide the appropriate treatment that not only will stop the person’s symptoms, but will also reverse the illness. As an example, this is done by removing toxins or rebalancing deficiencies in the body that was found in their lab tests. The lab results are the key to provide custom guidance of functional medicine protocols, supplements and an appropriate eating program to address that individual needs.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Conventional medicine has a definite place in medicine.  In fact, convention medicine is great at treating acute-based injures such as a fractured bone, acute infections, wound treatment. However, it is fair to say conventional medicine has failed at treating chronic illnesses such as weight issues, hormonal issues, thyroid issues, diabetes, high blood pressure, digestive issues, autoimmune issues, low energy and chronic joint pain.

Typically, people with these issues chronically have the following symptoms:

  • difficulty sleeping

  • acid reflux,

  • constipation

  • gassy/bloated

  • difficulty losing weight

  • brain fog

  • skin rashes/skin tags/acne

  • joint pain

  • and mood swings

    The Problem:

    Most people try to address these issues by themselves at first with over the counter pills and then start going to the doctor who provides pharmaceutical drugs to stop the symptoms. At best, the drugs provide temporary relief but they won’t fix the problem. They merely provide a band-aide type of approach.

    And, the biggest problem with taking prescription drugs is that they all have side-effects. You end up having to take more drugs to address the side-effects. Does this sound familiar? That is because it is way too common.

So Here’s the Take Home Distinction

This is where Functional Medicine comes in. It has become the ANSWER for a lot of people who are sick and tired of being sick and tired.  Functional Medicine is branch of medicine who’s time has come. Since 1991, it has developed excellent diagnostic systems.

These lab tests ranges are designed to detect when your body is not in its optimal ranges to be functioning normally. The ranges are smaller and stricter than those in conventional medicine. The Functional Medicine ranges reflect the “sweet spot” where the body is able to function normally. So when you are out of these ranges these markers become red flags that are like a road map leading me to identify the root cause of your health issues that have caused the abnormal symptoms you are experiencing. The functional medicine ranges are the actual ranges that your body functions at its best.

The goal of functional medicine is to get you “functioning” again. That is why it is called Functional Medicine.

Finding these out of range biomarkers are the underlying root cause and they explain why you are experiencing the abnormal symptoms that you are. Whereas, conventional medicine lab ranges are averages of people who have that diagnoses. The conventional lab ranges are not aiming at optimal health whereas functional/integrative health does.

Why Is Functional Medicine Also Known As Integrative Health?


Functional Medicine is a whole-person approach. It involves addressing the mind, body and spirit.

We not only look at objective data that is found on the functional medicine labs but we also take the time to listen to you and find out what other things are going on in your life that may also be out of balance.

What to Expect During the Detox

So you’re considering doing the detox but are maybe feeling nervous or hesitant because you don’t know what to expect or aren’t sure you’ll be able to finish it.

I get it; I felt the same way before completing it my first time. BUT, that was because I had little support and was doing it alone.  I understand the importance of support and community, so I’ve created all these blogs to remove your misgivings, AND I have created a free Facebook Group to support you every step!

The system is the same whether you’re considering the 7, 14, or 21-day detox. You follow the same food plan, supplements, and system for 1, 2, or 3 weeks.  


In this blog, we’re going to break down

What the Detox Actually Looks Like

  • Two Fasting Days:  The detox involves two fasting days each week, during which you will consume the Daily Nutritional Support shake four times a day, along with two supplements. While the fasting days are some of the most powerful and essential in my mind, you can skip them if you don’t want to lose weight or if fasting REALLY doesn’t agree with you.

  • Days 3-7: Expect to drink a morning shake, eat plant-based lunches, have a midafternoon shake, and have a Paleo-style dinner with animal-based protein like chicken, turkey, or fish (if you eat those). Most vegetables are allowed, provided they don’t cause bloating or gas. The detox itself comes with a food list and gives you instructions on how to build your meals.

  • Days 8+: If you continue with the 14 or 21-day detox after day 7, you will repeat the fasting days on days 8/9 and 15/16 and follow the 2-shake/2 meal plan on other days.

  • What You Stop Doing: The detox removes processed foods, snacks, and added sugars. You also won’t be eating out during the detox, which will be a big part of your success — cutting out toxic oils and LOTS of inflammation.

  • What’s Included: The detox kit includes all the shakes and supplements needed and an approved food list to make the detox as simple as possible. Click here for the Food Guide and Shopping List.

It is essential to take the supplements as directed and follow the schedule outlined in the detox guide as closely as possible.

What You Can Expect During the Detox

  • You’ll learn a lot: Expect to learn a lot about yourself during the detox. It sounds cheesy, but the detox can be challenging on many levels. The detox challenges you to change how you eat, rethink how you look at food, and look at your relationship with food. Many people finish a detox and feel “free” from the control food cravings or unhealthy foods have over them.

  • You will feel empowered: The detox will empower you and show that YOU control your health and symptoms. Expect to feel much better after the detox and learn the importance of detoxing regularly for optimal health!

  • Symptoms:  Depending on your toxic load before the detox (you can test your toxic load here: Toxicity Quiz), expect new symptoms to appear or current symptoms to worsen temporarily. As toxins leave our body (thanks to the extra support the detox gives to our liver and body), we sometimes can feel achy, have headaches, or develop new or worsening symptoms. Don’t worry; this usually only lasts a few days! We’ll dive into common symptoms and what to do about them below.

  • Results & weight loss:  People notice positive benefits DURING the detox: weight loss, increased energy, better sleep, and improved mood. If weight loss is a concern, you can avoid the fasting days or increase your carbohydrate intake during the detox.

  • Hunger and cravings might subside: While you may experience hunger on the fasting days, this detox makes you feel satiated. You may miss eating your favorite foods, but you shouldn’t expect to feel hungry.

  • You’ll stop craving unhealthy foods:  It doesn’t take long for cravings for sweets and processed foods to disappear!  Do you constantly crave sugar?  That should disappear within a couple of days!

  • Expect to feel calm:  This is one of the most common things I hear from detoxers: how calm they feel!  It’s a truly incredible feeling, and I recommend enjoying every second!

Everyone’s detox experience is different, but from my experience, everything starts to shift on day 3 after you’ve completed your fasting days, given your body, brain, and gut a rest, and begin to nourish with quality nutrient-dense foods!


Common Detox Symptoms & What To Do About Them


During the detox, some people feel fantastic throughout the entire process, and others may have days where they feel slightly unwell. Detox or withdrawal symptoms from coffee and processed foods are common and may manifest differently for each person.

Symptoms like headaches, fatigue, body aches, insomnia, and mood swings are among the most common. If you encounter any of these symptoms, consider trying the following:

  • Include minerals in your drinking water. This will ensure your cells are hydrated and aid in numerous bodily functions, including detoxification.

  • Practice mindfulness. Remember, these symptoms show that your body can focus on removing things that are not beneficial.  The symptoms are temporary and will ultimately lead to long-term health benefits.

  • Take a break when necessary. There is no shame in taking a moment to catch your breath! Rest and let your body do what it knows best.

  • Get plenty of sleep! Your body and liver perform most of their detoxification during sleep. If you aren’t sleeping well, it can contribute to many of your symptoms.

  • Take an Epsom salt bath to soothe your nervous system and reduce detox symptoms. Baths allow your skin to detoxify through sweating, and magnesium in Epsom salt encourages additional detoxification.

  • Take a binder to help bind excess toxins and remove them from the body.

  • Drink coffee if you went off of coffee in anticipation of the detox. Again, one of the most common reasons people experience headaches during the detox is withdrawal from caffeine.


If you still have symptoms, you can take things a step further:

  • Move your lymph: Support the movement of your lymph by dry brushing or rebounding, which can help get toxins moving faster.

  • Use your Infrared Sauna: You can use this tool to speed up the elimination of toxins from your body. But be careful not to overdo it, as this may cause fatigue. Only jump in the sauna if you aren’t feeling drained.

  • Exercise: Keep your body moving, even just gentle movements like walking, yoga, or stretching. Every little bit helps!

  • If you’re suffering from constipation after day 3: Send me a message, and let’s address this together!

  • For dizziness:  Add blueberries to your shakes and/or avoid fasting days altogether. Limit exercise and rest as much as you can. Consider discontinuing the detox until symptoms subside.

  • If you’re still experiencing discomfort, try reducing the dosage of your herbal supplements by half. Alternatively, you could skip several doses and see if your symptoms improve.

How To Have The Best Detox Experience Possible


The detox is a simple and straightforward program with all the instructions you’ll need to succeed.

BUT, what I’ve found after helping countless people through this detox is that the more you prepare ahead of time, the more successful you will be!

In this blog, I will help you prepare your mind, body, family, and kitchen to help you knock this detox out of the park and start feeling amazing!

How To Prepare For Your Detox

My goal is for you to complete this detox so you can see all the excellent benefits I’ve seen others experience.

If it’s your first time, you might have some light detox symptoms or struggle to stick with the program if you aren’t clear on what to expect or what to do if symptoms DO come up.

Let’s dive in and help you have the best experience possible!

How To Prepare Your Body

  • Caffeine:  Gradually decrease your caffeine intake one to two weeks before starting the detox to avoid caffeine withdrawal symptoms that can be mistaken for detox symptoms.

If you stop coffee cold turkey on the day of the detox, you’re likely to experience withdrawal headaches. Going off of coffee 100% is not required during the detox, though I’d recommend less than 1 cup daily in the morning.  Alternatively, you can switch to decaf.

  • Sweating: Do you currently sweat several times a week?  Sweating is a great way to support your body in removing toxins. It’s not required but will help your body and liver process and remove more toxins.  You can exercise, use an infrared sauna, or take a warm bath to encourage sweating.

  • Bowel Movements:  Make sure you are pooping every day (twice a day is best), as pooping is crucial for eliminating toxins from your body. If you struggle in this area, try drinking warm lemon water with sea salt each morning or using other methods such as abdominal massage, magnesium citrate, dry brushing, fiber-rich foods, and coffee enemas to keep things moving.

Keep in mind, during fasting days, it’s not uncommon to not have a bowel movement for a day or two.  Your bowels will start moving again once you eat on days 3-4.

  • Binders:  Consider taking a binder supplement during the detox to bind and safely remove toxins from your body. A binder can lessen any detox symptoms you may experience and increase the amount of toxins your body can eliminate.

  • Keep your lymphatic system moving:  Your lymphatic system surrounds your organs, holds a LOT of toxins, and plays a crucial role in detoxification.  Keeping it moving with exercise, rebounding on a trampoline, and dry brushing can help prevent stagnation and help you avoid symptoms.

  • BONUS: Support your liver with additional tools: You can support your liver and liver bile ducts (little tubes that go from your liver to your gut and help you move toxins out of the body) with warm lemon water, dandelion tea, milk thistle tea, and coffee enemas.  These are not required, but give your liver some extra support!

How To Prepare Your Mind

  • Mindset:  The success of your detox relies heavily on your mindset. It’s essential that you go into the detox believing that you will complete it and that it WILL improve your health. Staying positive helps you push through the hard days (fasting days) and see the wins as they start to come!

  • What’s your why?: I like to have people identify WHY they are doing this detox. Why do you want to feel more energy?  Why do you want fewer symptoms?  What will life look like once you experience the transformation you’re looking for?

Write them down and place them somewhere visible so you can be reminded each day why you’re choosing to keep moving forward even when it’s challenging!  It’s also helpful to speak with your family and share your WHY.

  • Create a mantra:  Identify a mantra or quote that speaks to and inspires you throughout the process. One of my favorites is, “Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.”


How To Prepare Your Family

  • Share Your Motivation & Why: It’s important that your family understands your motivation behind doing this detox and how important it is to you. Having their support can be a significant factor in your success.

  • Ask them to join:  Consider inviting family members to join you! Detoxing with family can make things easier and more fun as you can cook and eat the same meals!

  • You’ll be eating at home more:  Inform them that you’ll focus on home-cooked meals during the detox, so you won’t be eating out.  If you DO plan on eating out, ensure you’re eating at healthy restaurants and still following the meal plan. This can be challenging on weekends when you might be in the habit of going out to your favorite restaurants.  Remember, this is only 7, 14, or 21 days!

  • Mark your fasting days on the calendar:  Let your family know when you’ll be fasting and that you may experience mood swings as your body adjusts. Request their understanding, and don’t feel guilty for prioritizing your health.


How To Prepare Your Kitchen

  • Remove temptations:  Before beginning your detox, it’s important to declutter your pantry and fridge. Remove tempting snacks, as there is no need to have them around! Here’s the detox-approved foods list for reference.  

  • Stock up on detox-approved foods: The detox comes with an approved foods list (above).  Day 3 is the first day you’ll dive into cooking, so you want to ensure you have detox-approved foods around.  You can also prepare your menu ahead of time with lots of delicious detox-approved recipes.  You can find a bunch of delicious recipes here!

Performing these extra steps before a detox will make this an easier and more enjoyable experience!

  • While this detox program is an excellent starting point for those seeking to kickstart their weight loss journey, it's worth noting that anyone can reap the rewards of detoxification, regardless of their weight loss goals. The extent of weight loss may vary depending on factors such as your toxic load and the detox duration, but shedding anywhere from 5 to 20 pounds is common.

  • If you're not looking to lose weight, consider incorporating a cup of blueberries into your smoothies on days 3 to 7, and add more permissible starches like sweet potatoes to your meals. Additionally, if you're not keen on losing weight, you can opt out of the fasting days. However, bear in mind that fasting days offer significant benefits, and skipping them may affect the overall outcome of your detox experience.

  • You'll receive an adequate supply of Daily Nutritional Support powder for your breakfast, afternoon shakes, and all the shakes you'll need during your fasting days as part of the detox package.

  • Toxins are present in all of us, although some individuals expel them faster than others.

    The longer your detox, the more benefits you will experience.  If you only committed to a 7-day, you will still benefit, but not NEARLY as much as if you commit to a 14 or 21-day.

    Even if you don't experience significant changes immediately, you reduce your toxic load whenever you consume a DNS shake, detox supplement, or healthy meal. Therefore, a functional medicine detox can be advantageous for anyone.

  • I understand! If this is your first detox, it can be overwhelming. I want you to feel prepared, so read my Before Your Detox blog here and my blog on What To Expect During Your Detox here

  • For optimal outcomes, it’s best to avoid coffee and caffeine. To prepare for detoxing, gradually reduce your coffee intake the week before starting. Abruptly stopping coffee can lead to withdrawal symptoms, which can be mistaken for detox symptoms.

    However, if you prefer to continue consuming coffee, limiting yourself to no more than 6 ounces of black, mold-free coffee is best. I also recommend drinking your coffee before noon so it doesn’t mess with your sleep.

  • Absolutely! The detox program is free of GMOs, gluten, nuts, dairy, eggs, and soy.

    You can customize your meals based on your dietary limitations and scrutinize the components in the DNS shake and the other two supplements to prevent adverse reactions.

    If you are allergic to one of the ingredients in the DNS shake or detox supplements, do not take them. Just following the diet and schedule alone is hugely healing and detoxing!

  • The DNS powder provides 15 grams of protein in every two scoops, which can cause a break in your fast for many individuals. Therefore, while fasting, consuming only one scoop of the powder is recommended four times a day, providing 7.5 grams of protein per shake. You can use a glucometer to track your blood sugar levels; as long as your blood sugar remains below 95, you are still fasting.

  • If this is your first time, opt for the 21-day detox, as it is an excellent method for reducing a lifetime of toxin accumulation. While a 7 or 14-day detox can still be advantageous, a 21-day program is ideal for beginners and REALLY helps kickstart your healing journey.

    No matter where you’re at or what your goals are, this is an incredible place to start!

  • Before starting the detox, I recommend consulting with your healthcare provider to ensure it is appropriate for you. If you choose to proceed with the detox, it is suggested to skip the fasting days and focus on maintaining adequate hydration by incorporating minerals and electrolytes into your diet. Drinking water infused with lemon or lime and adding a pinch of sea salt can maximize hydration levels.

    To avoid weight loss, add spinach and blueberries to your smoothies. If eating becomes necessary during the initial two days, follow the instructions for days 3-7.

  • It's no surprise to me :) I'm delighted you're seeing fantastic results! I've prepared a comprehensive guide to sustain the momentum and keep moving forward!

  • The objective of the detox is progress, not perfection. If you accidentally skip something, continue the detox program as scheduled. The aim is to enhance hydration, optimize liver detoxification, and reduce stress. Nothing bad will happen if you accidentally miss a capsule.

  • The detox program was designed with great care to maximize outcomes, but you can adapt it to suit your requirements. Refrain from having your initial shake before 6 am and spacing out the remaining shakes by 3.5-4 hours. As much as possible, adhere to the list of authorized foods and allocate time for food preparation to ensure a successful outcome.

  • Most can complete this detox, but please consult your health practitioner if you:

    Are under the age of 18

    Are pregnant or breastfeeding

    Have liver or kidney disease

    Have a gallbladder condition

    Have appendicitis or a history of it

    Have an eating disorder

    Have Type 1 diabetes

    On medications that are contraindicated with any ingredients in the detox shakes or supplements.

  • You should seek advice from your healthcare provider to verify that none of the shakes and/or supplement ingredients conflict with your prescribed medications. Unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare practitioner, please continue taking all prescribed medications throughout the duration of the detox.

  • During the detox program, you can drink unsweetened and caffeine-free herbal tea. You may have 6 ounces of black coffee in the morning if necessary. Refrain from consuming coconut water or drinks with natural or added sugar. To guarantee that you consume pure water in all your approved beverages, utilize a filtration system like the TheraH20 pitcher.

  • Certainly, unless you are feeling depleted on fasting days, pay attention to your body's signals and take it easy if required. The primary objective of the detox program is to supply the body with essential nutrients to facilitate toxin removal, rest, and rejuvenation.

    So yes, you can exercise; just don’t overdo it!

  • This may indicate weak digestion. To alleviate the issue, try consuming your shake gradually over 60 to 90-minute intervals. This should result in an improvement.

  • Yes! The capsules can be broken apart and mixed into your shakes.

  • Children shouldn't undergo the detox program; however, there are several ways to provide them with nutritional support. Children can consume the Daily Nutritional Support shakes with a single scoop instead of two and choose healthy food alongside you.

How to Maximize Your Detox Experience


You’re doing this!  Now, let’s make you even more successful than the average detoxer. Yes, you can do the detox and have incredible results just following the instructions provided in the 7, 14, or 21-day detox box, OR, you could go a step further and amplify your results.

No matter what your GOAL is for doing this detox, whether it’s weight loss, more energy, better sleep, clearer skin, you name it, there are things you can do to empty even MORE toxins out of your body and knock your goal out of the park!

Here are some ways to maximize your experience and make your detox even more successful…

Sweat it out in the sauna:  Use an infrared sauna if you have one! Sauna sessions will help speed up toxin removal from the body, help you lose weight faster, calm the nervous system, and SO much more. They are the perfect healing treatment to pair with a detox to amplify your results!  If you’re feeling depleted or exhausted, avoid the sauna that day.

Walk after your meals:  It doesn’t have to be a long walk; aim for at least 10 minutes.   Walking, especially after dinner, helps support digestion and lower blood sugar and is one of the best habits you can work into your long-term life.

Drink organic herbal teas:  Herbal teas are incredibly powerful for many things.  Consider adding dandelion, milk thistle, hibiscus, echinacea, or any specialty tea with added benefits!  Dandelion and milk thistle are very good for supporting your liver and gut health!

Start reducing the toxins you’re ADDING to your body:  This week, focus on lowering the toxins currently stored in your body.  Why not start reducing what you’re adding to your body daily so you can stop filling your rain barrel?  We’re not just talking about food here; this is where you start to look at reducing the toxins you’re adding to your body through:

  • Skincare & makeup

  • Cleaning products

  • Air filters

  • Water purifiers

  • Haircare

  • Laundry detergents

Ensure you drink clean water:  Filter or drink filtered spring water for maximum hydration. Use clean, filtered water and hot tea for your shakes to ensure you aren’t exposing yourself to more toxins as you actively eliminate them.

Add organic lemon to your water: I love enjoying warm lemon water in the morning, but you can drink this throughout the day as well to keep those toxins moving out of your body! Lemons and limes are incredibly powerful for supporting your liver, giving you energy, alkalizing your body, and are a great thing to include in your daily habits.  Add a pinch of sea salt.

Pay attention to your wins:  You’re going to notice a LOT of positive changes during the detox. But you want to continue to feel amazing after the detox, don’t you?  Pay attention to WHY you feel so good!  Is it the new healthy habits you’re creating? Is it the foods you’re NOT eating? Are they the nutrient-dense foods you’ve added?  Is it the 12-in-1 multivitamin shake you’re drinking every day?  Pay attention so that you can keep the momentum going and not rebound when the detox is over!

Move your body! Choose a form of exercise that you enjoy. If you are healing and not up for strenuous workouts, rebounding, sauna, walking, and/or dry brushing are great ways to move while not stressing the body. But doing regular cardio and weight training (not going all out with HIT workouts) will improve the benefits you experience!

Minimize stress: Allow yourself grace and rest during this time. It is NOT a time to push yourself during the detox. Your body needs rest to heal!

Utilize healing technology: For those looking to help calm the nervous system and heal at a higher level, I’d look into a PEMF mat with countless benefits, including supporting cellular detox and cellular health.  

Plan your meals: Get in the habit of planning your meals at least a few days ahead of time.  It will reduce the stress of meal prep and help you shop smarter.

Take a binder:  Binders will help remove toxins from the body and support your liver and detox organs.  

Enjoy a coffee enema: This isn’t for everyone, but if you’re serious about supporting your liver and toxin elimination, coffee enemas are one of the most powerful ways to do that!  They help stimulate bile flow, open up your liver bile ducts, stimulate glutathione (big deal), and make you feel amazing!

Castor oil packs:  These help pull additional toxins out of the body and are way less invasive than a coffee enema.  Something to consider!

Remember, none of these things are required!  But if you want to maximize and amplify the benefits you experience and the transformation of the Equi.life detox, every one of the things I’ve listed above can help you do that!

Living a Detoxing Lifestyle



Living a detoxing lifestyle can help you feel amazing and wake up with energy every day.  It involves being mindful of what you put in and on your body and keeping in your environment.  BUT, it’s also about loving your liver!



If your liver’s unhappy, your gut will be unhappy, you’ll have low energy, and you might have a lot of pain. An unhappy liver causes problems and symptoms throughout the body.

So, let’s dive into loving your liver, how to boost liver health, and start your journey towards a detoxing lifestyle!

How to detox your liver and start living a detox lifestyle

A happy liver requires lowering your toxic load, filling your body with foundational nutrients and building blocks for cellular function, and supporting your gut and lymphatic system. I could dive deeper into more layers, but I’ll save that for another blog.


Here are some ways to make your liver happy….

  • Start lessening the toxins you’re exposed to daily in these areas…

  • Be mindful of the food and liquids you put in your body. Aim for organic, non-GMO, grass-fed, pasture-raised, and wild food when possible. Avoid processed foods and keep them as close to their natural form as possible.

  • Personal care products

  • Cleaning supplies

  • Your air

  • Your water - What you drink, but also what you shower and bathe in

  • What you cook with

and literally, anything you bring into your home, office, or car.

These are all huge sources of toxins. New furniture, paints, and plastics off-gass toxins for months, if not years.  

  • Add detoxing foods and herbal drinks: Foods like cruciferous vegetables, berries and citrus fruits, garlic and turmeric, and drinks like milk thistle tea, dandelion tea, ginger tea, peppermint tea, and green tea can aid liver detox. Even coffee, free of pesticides and mycotoxins, can support the liver because it contains protective antioxidants and compounds that help liver enzymes. There are MANY foods, drinks, and herbs in your life that your liver will love!

  • Sweat daily: Sweating is one of the most powerful and successful ways of eliminating excess toxins from the body and taking stress off the liver.  I recommend exercising or using an infrared sauna to get your sweat moving.

I LOVE my infrared sauna. It was pivotal in my healing journey because I could finally expel years of toxin and heavy metal build-up, deal with mold toxicity, and manage the die-off of pathogens. Once I learned to replace my vitamin C, add minerals and electrolytes afterward, and pair my sauna sessions with a binder, my health skyrocketed even further! I use the Infrared Sauna from Therasage.

        Sweating is a great way to support your liver and detox at home.

  • Coffee enemas: Coffee enemas can increase glutathione production, pushing and supporting liver detox at home. Coffee also contains compounds that stimulate the liver and gallbladder to release bile, making coffee enemas an excellent tool for increasing bile production.


Think of bile as your new best friend because adequate bile production helps digest food, flush toxins through the liver, and maintain a balanced gut microbiome so pathogens can’t flourish.

  • Drinking warm morning lemon water:  This is one of the simplest and least expensive things you can do to support liver detox.

Warm lemon water also helps stimulate the production of bile, which helps with digestion and the breakdown of fats. Breaking down our food properly allows us to absorb all the nutrients and use them for energy. The citric acid in lemons enhances the liver's natural detoxification processes to remove toxins from the body effectively.

  • PEMF Therapy.  I can’t say enough about this powerful but gentle therapy.

PEMF does incredible things for the body, but cellular detox is one of the big ones.  It goes down to the cellular level and helps mobilize and release toxins from your cells, then helps improve circulation to assist in removal from the body.  This is an amazing 7-in-1 PEMF therapy device I highly recommend.

  • Drinking 1/2 your body weight in ounces: Water is essential for life, but it’s also essential for detoxing and THE best liver detox drink. Staying hydrated helps you regulate your body temperature, transport nutrients, and flush waste and toxins out of your body. Ensure your water is filtered, and add minerals and electrolytes to your water in the form of either mineral drops, a pinch of sea salt, or your favorite electrolyte mix.

  • Doing quarterly functional medicine detoxes: Performing a functional medicine detox can ease the toxic burden on your liver by purging years' worth of ‘sludge’ while providing the liver with the nutrients needed for optimal detoxification.

Performing a detox for 7, 14, or 21 days can improve your health quickly because, besides taking the shakes and supplements, you eliminate the most inflammatory foods to allow your body to reach its maximum healing potential.   • Exercise: Stagnation brews disease. I learned this the hard way, and if you take anything away from this blog, please try to Move. Your. Body. Daily.

Movement gets the blood circulating and supplies oxygen and nutrients to your cells and organs. Exercise also helps the body sweat, therefore sweating out toxins.

  • Dry Brushing:  This is one of the simplest and easiest things you can do to support full body detoxification as it helps stimulate movement of your lymphatic system. This layer under your skin is pretty much a toxic waste dump. Unfortunately, unlike the heart, it doesn’t have its own pump, so you need to help your lymphatic system move with exercise, dry brushing, or rebounding to get toxins out of the body.

  • Rebounding:  It might sound strange, but lightly bouncing on a trampoline is a powerful detox habit! Just like dry brushing, it stimulates your largest detox organ to help you flush toxins out of your body!  You can get a small trampoline here and bounce a few minutes a day!



I recommend everyone do a liver detox, add liver cleansing foods, drink liver detox drinks, sweat every day, and focus on lowering the amount of toxins you bring into your home and put in your body daily.

If you start a detoxing lifestyle and pay attention to these things, it will positively affect every cell and organ in your body, and your liver will get happier and happier every day!

Congrats!!  You’re either super close to finishing, or you’ve already finished your detox, and that’s incredible!

Everyone experiences a detox differently, and you might wonder, what’s next?  How can I build on these results? How can I keep feeling amazing and keep from rebounding?

Keep the Sweating Going!

Whether you started using a sauna during the detox or increased exercise, sweating is one of the most powerful ways to keep your toxic burden low.  An infrared sauna is one of the most effective tools for reducing your toxic burden. I find my sauna session both relaxing and energizing.

Move Forward with Foundational Supplements

  • Food Sensitivity Test: What’s a superfood for one person could be a poison for another.  Food sensitivities tax your immune system, cause chronic inflammation, steal energy, and much more.  This tests 192 of the most common foods and can help you identify foods causing you problems.

  • Omega 3 and Inflammation Test: This test looks at heart health and inflammation and shows your ratios of Omega 3 to Omega 6.  Once you know your Omega levels and ratios, it’s a simple adjustment to return to optimal heart health and lower inflammation!

Consider a Parasite Protocol

Parasite cleansing is a great next step to consider after your detox. Parasites are a significant root cause, and everyone has them to some extent.  They are putting stress on every cell and organ in your body and are one of the causes of internal toxicity.

When you’re moving through and trying to eliminate root causes, parasites are the next best step after detox because they act as biofilm communities, and other things (yeast, heavy metals, mold, etc.) live inside parasites.  Once you lower your parasite load, you will more successfully address your other root causes.

Plan Your Next Detox

A 21-day detox can be done four times per year (seasonally), or you can do a 7 or 14-day more often every 1-2 months. Listen to your body, and you’ll know when you're ready for another one!

But it’s great to schedule it ahead of time. Then, you might even get others to detox with you!

Add in a One-Day Reset

You just proved to yourself that you can fast, and it’s an incredibly powerful habit to keep in your life.

A one-day reset involves fasting using the DNS shake, which can give your digestive system a much-needed break. This method can be used anytime you want to cleanse your system, such as after traveling or when your gut needs a rest.

You only need the Daily Nutritional Support 12-in-One Protein Shake to perform a One Day Reset.

Here’s an example schedule for your day:

  • Start your day with one DNS shake (1 scoop) about an hour after waking up.

  • Have another DNS shake (1 scoop) for lunch

  • Have another DNS shake (1 scoop) in the mid-afternoon

  • For dinner, enjoy a vegan/paleo-style meal similar to what you had during the detox, including ½ cup of cooked vegetables, 4-6 oz of lean protein, and 1-2 tbsp of healthy fat.

You can do this up to once a week! It’s a GREAT way to reset your system!

Keep Up With Healthy Habits

You just created some amazing healthy habits!  Here are some ways to keep up with these!

Consider adopting a similar meal plan after detox. For example, if you enjoyed the liquid-based breakfast during the detox, try having a smoothie every morning with berries, greens (or Daily Fruit and Vegetable), DNS powder, and healthy fat. This breakfast keeps me full for hours. You can even add more beneficial ingredients, such as fruit, to meet your needs.

Incorporate at least three vegan lunches weekly to support healthy digestion and keep your gut happy.

If you feel hungry between meals, choose snacks such as green juice, raw nuts, vegetables with hummus, or a second smoothie.

Stick to the paleo-style dinners recommended in the detox plan since they will continue to support your body.  

Whenever possible, cook your meals at home to limit eating out to 1-2 times per week.

Aim to eat meals every 3.5- 4 hours.

Continue dry brushing to maximize lymph drainage.

Maintain regular bowel movements by aiming to have two daily bowel movements to help your body release toxins and prevent them from building up and causing symptoms.

Drink warm lemon water with sea salt in the morning to move your bowels and support your liver.

Slowly Reintroduce Foods

After eliminating certain food groups during the detox, it’s essential to reintroduce them slowly to avoid triggering inflammation. Certain foods such as dairy, gluten (wheat), soy, red meat, corn, peanuts, pork, and shellfish can be inflammatory for some individuals.

To identify which foods are causing your symptoms, try reintroducing each food group on separate days and pay close attention to any adverse reactions.

As you begin incorporating these foods into your diet, ask yourself whether you’re experiencing bloating, gas, stuffy nose, itchy skin, or other unusual symptoms.

These can help determine if the reintroduction is worth it. You can also take a food sensitivity test to identify foods you should avoid.
